As sprinter Fabio Jakobsen won the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana slovenian Primoz Roglic secured his first Grand Tour.
Jakobsen, 23, took his second stage win of the race, narrowly defeating Sam Bennett at a sprint that was chaotic.
Even the Irishman found himself boxed in and although he was closing fast was not able to add to his two preceding point wins.
Jumbo Visma’s Roglic, 29, finished two minutes 16 seconds before Spain’s Alejandro Valverde.
Roglic became the very first Slovenian to acquire the overall classification at one of cycling’s three Grand Tours – the Vuelta, the Tour of France and the Giro d’Italia.
After winning the time trial on stage 17, he transferred.
He was favourite for the point and put a minute and a half to all of his main rivals.
That gave him a lead of nearly two minutes at the GC and with assistance from his Jumbo Visma group he managed to retain the jersey on the second half of the Vuelta most of the way to Madrid.
On a day for Slovenia, 20-year-old Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates combined winning the rider group, as well as Roglic on the podium in third place.
Spanish riders Jesus Ezquerra produced a ring and proposed to his girlfriend during this stage. She said .
