The Brooklyn Nets lost characters from their bench and starting lineup that summer, since they watched Jason Kidd skip town for Paul and Milwaukee Pierce join the upstart Washington Wizards. Those losses will change Brooklyn’s makeup not, although considerably for the worse. Lionel Hollins replaces Kidd, along with his seven seasons of head coaching experience should mesh nicely with the Nets’ veteran roster. At exactly the same time, Beckley Mason, in a piece for ESPN.com, raised some interesting questions about the reputation Hollins assembled with the Memphis Grizzlies.
“Is what Tony Allen does something you can tutor?” he asked. “Is the way Marc Gasol moves 7’0″ and 260 pounds to stymie a point protector something everyone can learn?”
We’re about to find out.
We find out whether Pierce’s production can be replicated by newcomer import Bojan Bogdanovic on the wing. And we’ll soon find out if Mason Plumlee’s time with Team USA in the FIBA Basketball World Cup will result in some large sophomore campaign Brook Lopez must overcome another setback with his surgically repaired foot, and Kevin Garnett has to prove he’s got enough juice made to contribute over a couple of minutes per match. But with Joe Johnson and Deron Williams in Jarrett Jack and the backcourt substituting Shaun Livingston Brooklyn remains a savvy squad with a fair amount of ability –even though most of it is currently nearing its expiry date.
The playoffs are a goal for the Nets, and a top-four seed isn’t out of the question in the event the Williams can stay healthy along with Lopez.
