Tony Bellew believes his former opponent Oleksandr Usyk can become world heavyweight champion by challenging Deontay Wilder – however cautioned that he will not conquer everyone in his new division.
Usyk knocked out Bellew last year to defend his cruiserweight title as well as as a heavyweight against Chazz Witherspoon live on Saturday night at 2am.
Bellew believes Usyk can achieve his objective of becoming world champion if he targets WBC holder Deontay Wilder.
Which are Usyks strengths and weaknesses?
Tony Bellew stated:Being there together with him you notice right away that he is constantly doing something and making you believe each step along the way. His footwork is unbelievable for such a huge man, and its his feet that put him into place for attacks.
For his weaknesses, I still think he is a tiny bit open and can be caught. Seeing his amateur conflicts, there was a response from him when he got captured blank, but nobody has exploited that far in the pros. His chin is up in the atmosphere sometimes and if that continues then it might get caught one time.
What did you fight with when you fought ?
Tony Bellew said:Pinning down him was hard because, as Ive stated, his footwork is simply on a different level. He had been too evasive, although I had planned to get close and work him over. His toes will get him very far in this game, and the way he feints and pops strikes is also impressive.
Do Usyk be hurt?
Tony Bellew said:The reply to this is simple, but executing its another issue. You have got to strike him clean.
There are a couple occasions from the amateurs at which he is trapped flush and that he does not like it. Because he is such a dazzling defensive fighter is going to be challenging, however, I believe if you can locate the goal then there is a great chance he could move. Doing that is a difficult task though.
When moving to heavyweight, is planning different?
Tony Bellew said:It is much easier and I think Usyk will love every second of it. So making dieting and weight was something I didnt 25, I have fought at 175lbs and cruiserweight for the majority of my career. Heavyweight eliminates that problem.
Do not get me wrong, you can not simply stuff your head, but eating the ideal foods as far as youd like is fine and it removes the pressure of needing to make weight. This was the largest difference for me personally. The sparring becomes different as you are dealing with larger men, but it is a necessity if you want to get in there and do it real.
From Tyson Fury Anthony Joshua, and Deontay Wilder, whos Usyk?
Tony Bellew said:Wilder, and that is an easy answer. Dont get me wrong, though Wilder lands on him then it is not likely to end well for Usyk, but it is possible to say that any heavyweight who Wilder lands.
I just think [Joshua and Fury] are too large for him. Hes a boxer than all of them, and I include Fury in that, but he is just too little to compete with them. I think the size of Fury and Joshua would be a enormous advantage and I dont think Usyk could overcome it.
Can Usyk win a world title?
Tony Bellew explained:Yes. If tomorrow he was to fight with Andy Ruiz I think hed win that battle by being and doing what he does best. Hes undoubtedly the most skilled fighter in the branch and that will always give him a chance against, although there are only a few men I do not see him winning. Seeing his moves there will be fun and that I want him all the best. Hes a superb fighter and Im certain he will succeed.
