Paddy McNair has told his Northern Ireland team-mates to keep believing following their hopes took a hit Monday’s 2-0 home defeat to Germany they can qualify for Euro 2020.
A performance in Windsor Park wasn’t enough to prevent Michael O’Neill’s side as the outstanding attack and the overdue minute of Serge Gnabry of Marcel Halstenberg proved the falling their first points of the effort
difference.
The outcome watched Germany move top amount, of Group C together with Northern Ireland to 12 points.
However, the task gets for the Green and White Army, together with the Netherlands and a trip to Frankfurt to emerge in November.
“Of course we would have obtained this position at the beginning of the effort,” McNair said. “We’ve got three really tough matches to come and now we go to Holland in another match.
“Then we’ve got them at home and Germany off, but we aren’t going to be disheartened.
“We’ll give all of them a tough game. There are plenty of positives and we move on to next month.”
A defeated O’Neill called the match a”missed opportunity” in the immediate aftermath, given the possibilities Northern Ireland made, adding two openings such as Conor Washington, during a powerful beginning to the evening .
“It’s really smaller margins from the sport, but I thought we had been brilliant in the first halfof” McNair added. “It is definitely a huge improvement. Even in the second half, Stuart [Dallas] took a yard wide which could easily go the other side of the post which makes it a different game again.”
When McNair tumbled under a challenge from Toni Kroos, northern Ireland may have had the opportunity to level in the penalty spot just before the hour, however, their appeals were waved away by referee Daniel Orsato.
“I have not seen the penalty incident again, but that I certainly felt a bit of contact,” said McNair. “There was not much attention, but I moved down. I didn’t want to maintain a situation where the ref thought it was a dive and then sent me off [for a second
Booking ], however I did not want him to think since I did feel it, there was no touch.
“It wasn’t much, but I still understand why the referee didn’t give it. There was contact, though, I’ve no doubt about this. Maybe VAR would have cleared that up.”
Dallas fired broad soon after, before matters settled at stoppage time but that was the last clear chance for the hosts.
“It’s a great sign coming from a game thinking we definitely have to have taken something out of it,” McNair added. “It’s our very best performance against those in recent meetings, but you can not help but feel it was a missed opportunity.
“But we’re still joint best of the bunch. I understand we have three tough games coming up, but we must stay positive considering the place we have put ourselves ”
