Outgoing coach Trevor Bayliss insists England are working hard on their Test-match batting – but need help from pitches in county cricket.
England have flourished under Bayliss in the stadium, culminating in the World Cup win in July if a triumph inspired over New Zealand at Lord’s.
However this summer they have stuttered in Test cricket and have now been skittled for 67 and 85 from Ireland and Australia.
Ahead of the final game as trainer, Bayliss – whose side will likely be looking to earn a 2-2 series draw with Australia – educated Sky Sports’ Rob Key:”I don’t think there is a doubt that the style of players we have got is appropriate to the one-day game.
“A few of the techniques have been affected by the one-day game but they are all very gifted batters. They all are currently working.
“All the things I hear folks talking about – soft hands, playing afterwards below your eyes have been worked and spoken about ever since I have been here and probably before.
“If we can play flatter wickets it gives batters the opportunity to bat for longer in these states and place those techniques in to play in a match situation.
“It’s all well and good doing it in the nets but under stress outside in the center a great deal of times you revert to what is natural.
“In one single series you perhaps want green grass so it moves more for the whole innings, but in the very long run the very best thing to do is perform on these wickets as far as we possibly can at the amount below so that we can bat longer and get more constant performances.
“Focus for more in the field, focus for longer if you bat. Spinners will come more in the game and also the speed bowlers will learn to adjust whenever there is not any shine or hardness around the ball.”
Bayliss coached England into an Ashes success in his very first series accountable for 2015, plus notable Test series falls in South Africa and Sri Lanka, but states the World Cup name”was the cherry on the top”.
England in a 50-over tournament that was international, the succeed, capped a four-year interval where they went from being dumped out of their previous World Cup in the group point.
“From the one-day match we took the reins off [the players] and said’go outside and say yourself, see how good you are’, knowing full well they were going to fall more and have bad matches,” said Bayliss, that formed a prosperous axis with captain Eoin Morgan.
“You know from the errors that you make and I’d love to consider, within a period of time, that when they had been knocked over slowly they began to work out it. The proof was not just the World Cup triumph but the manner in.
“We’ve played on very flat wickets for the last four years but we have to a World Cup final on wickets using a bit within them. We were able to adapt, which is what we were about the entire moment. We researched the ceiling and after that, through experience, pulled it back when we had to.
“We went through a time in the center of the World Cup where it didn’t move as we needed but we stuck to our guns and when the heat was – needing to win four in a row against four of the top teams at the contest – we were able to do it.
“This was the cherry on top. To see the joy on the players’ faces, the trainers’ and management, and also also the English cricket lovers in general. It is something I won’t forget for a long time.”
Bayliss also talked about why he gets on with Stokes, a month, whose nice summer included a unbeaten 135 in the third Ashes Test.
“He had a confidence ,” additional Bayliss.
“He had a whole lot of skill but how he went about his practice, you simply knew he that wasn’t going to take a backward step in any type of contest, whether batting, bowling or in the area.
“He wasn’t reluctant to express his perspectives, at times when he believed I was wrong.”
On Stokes missing a massive chunk of cricket after the Bristol episode in September 2017, including the previous away Ashes series, Bayliss included:”I attempted to keep a fairly philosophical view on it, tried to panic as small as possible.
“From it, I believe we have seen Ben, along with a lot of the other guys, mature and grow as human beings. They’re great people and that is exactly what you would like to view.”
