We have a peek at the big issues, hear from both camps and have the team news before the play-off battle between Salford Red Devils and Castleford Tigers in the AJ Bell Stadium…
It’s a frightening potential for opponents to regard the possibility Jackson Hastings could produce displays than those he’s so far in 2019, but this is precisely what the self-appraisal of the Salford talisman is.
Hastings’ first full season in the AJ Bell Stadium has seen him become the favourite to assert Super League’s Man of Steel award and win the Rugby League Writers and Broadcasters Association’s player of the year accolade.
Much Daryl Powell, head coach Thursday’s opponents, went on record calling him”the best player in the comp”. The guy himself considers there are areas of the game he wants to boost in.
“There’s been moments this past year where I’ve been really proud of everything I have been able to achieve on the field and there have been moments where I’d liked to have done more,” Hastings said.
“My sport is nowhere near ideal. There’s a few little things that I want to fix .”
Along with being thankful to Salford for helping him rebuild his career after departing NRL side Manly Sea Eagles beneath a cloud mid-season in 2018, Hastings is grateful for his mom Megan’s help and guidance.
The will be hoping she is going to be able to fly over from Australia to watch the climax of the Super League season along with his time even though he hopes it goes when she was showing her support.
“She came over last year to see me perform and I got red-carded the first game,” Hastings recalled.
“She’s seen me play once in two years live which is actually uncommon for our loved ones, but I have two small sisters who need care for in the home.
“Mum’s clearly frustrated that she can’t observe all of the time, but she has upgraded by the lovers. They blow off up her phone, she wakes up to about 200 messages.”
There was little surprise if Castleford reached the Super League Grand Final having finished top of the table and claimed the League Leaders’ Shield in their Super Eights’ end by a margin of 10 points.
However, after playing a scintillating annually and edging past St Helens at the semi-finals, Daryl Powell’s negative came up short against Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford in a humbling beat that was 24-6.
Fast forward two years and the Tigers are at the but this time very few folks are speaking about these after slipping into the top five on points gap on the final night of the season.
At least couple of people were before Thursday, when Castleford forced by rapping outside Challenge Cup winners Warrington Wolves at the first elimination game using a win in the Halliwell Jones Stadium the rest of Super League sit up and take notice.
The sole Yorkshire representative in this season’s play-offs will need to travel across the Pennines again to face Salford in a second elimination game and might need to again to get a place at Old Trafford if they undergo Thursday’s match.
Oliver Holmes, who played at that two decades ago, is not fazed by this prospect although and agreed doing it the hard way in 2019 has gained Castleford in these knock-out matches.
“Travelling over the Pennines into Lancashire is not always pleasant – obviously, as you are going to Lancashire,” Holmes joked. “However, I believe we have dealt with it pretty well and we’re likely to have to take care of it well again on Thursday.
“Like Powelly has stated, we are in better shape today excited about this play-offs than we had been in 2017 – and now I think he is perfect.
“We’ve had to take care of a whole great deal more, we are a lot more hardened and there is a lot more steel than back then, so I guess it is going to stand us in good stead.”
It is honours between Salford and Castleford much together with the teams winning one game apiece through the Super League regular period.
Tries from Nathan Massey, Jordan Rankin – that kicked four goals as well – Jesse Sene-Lefao and Greg Eden proved sufficient for the Tigers to take a victory against the Red Devils in the Jungle in March.
Salford got one back on Castleford in June with that man Hastings setting up two in the 26-16 success and helping inspire the hosts to victory.
Lee Mossop, niall Evalds and Derrell Olpherts crossed to the Red Devils as well, with Krisnan Inu kicking six goals to put the seal.
The victors on Thursday evening would probably just 1 step away from a location in the Grand Final, go on to face the loser of Friday’s showdown between St Helens and Wigan Warriors the following week.
Salford head coach Ian Watson has stuck with the same group as last week’s qualifying game away to Wigan, which found despite having an defeat them placed in an encouraging display.
Tigers head coach Daryl Powell has made two changes to his 19-man squad from the elimination play-off out of the triumph over Warrington.
Greg Eden and Nathan Massey are both back in contention, although Calum Turner and mike McMeeken are ruled out because of injury.
Salford Red Devils 19-man group: Niall Evalds, Kris Welham, Jake Bibby, Lee Mossop, Adam Wood, Gil Dudson, Josh Jones, George Griffin, Mark Flanagan, Joey Lussick, Adam Walker, Greg Burke, Tyrone McCarthy, Logan Tomkins, Ken Sio, Krisnan Inu, Ryan Lannon, Tui Lolohea, Jackson Hastings
Castleford Tigers 19-man squad: Cheyse Blair, James Clare, Chris Clarkson, Matt Cook, Greg Eden, Jamie Ellis, Oliver Holmes, Will Maher, Nathan Massey, Peter Mata’utia, Paul McShane, Grant Millington, Adam Milner, Greg Minikin, Jacques O’Neill, Jordan Rankin, Daniel Smith, Jake Trueman, Liam Watts
