Nevada legalized sports betting in 1949 alongside reside and off-track horse gambling. It was the first state to govern sports gambling, which had previously functioned under organized crime syndicates. It was the only state to do so until recently.
Congress passed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 1992, which illegal prospective state growth of sports gambling. Nevada was grandfathered in, so it was essentially handed a lawful US monopoly on single-game wagering.
States eventually began to challenge that federal ban, nevertheless, spearheaded by New Jersey lawmakers and Gov. Chris Christie. Beginning with voter approval in 2011, NJ tried to pass legislation that would have legalized sports gambling at casinos and racetracks. Sports leagues — the NBA, NCAA, NFL, NHL, and MLB — filed suit against the country to block the attempts, but citing a violation of PASPA.
The ensuing legal battle escalated all the way into the US Supreme Court, eventually reaching a settlement on May 14, 2018. A vast majority of the nine-member court ruled the PASPA commandeers states in breach of the Tenth Amendment, hitting the ban from the novels.
As a result, Nevada’s US monopoly online sports gambling has seen its final days. Eight other countries offer a wide selection of legal sports stakes.
