Man City’s defensive vulnerabilities discussed on Sunday Supplement after Norwich shock

Manchester City’s defensive problems come under the spotlight.
Pep Guardiola’s negative were chaotic without the wounded Aymeric Laporte and have been punished once Kenny McLean and Todd Cantwell sent Norwich.
Sergio Aguero altered the half-time complexion when he glanced at Bernardo Silva’s cross moments before the interval, but it was another defensive lapse saw which Emi Buendia rob Nicolas Otamendi on the edge of the City box before squaring for Teemu Pukki to evaluate the goal which finally saw Norwich grip for success.
Speaking on Sunday Supplement, The Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt, Miguel Delaney of The Independent and ESPN’s Natalie Gedra analysed City’s defensive problems…
Burt:”The significant problem is the defence. I believe Vincent Kompany and Laporte’s harm has been crucial for them. You examine the mixture of both John and Otamendi Stones, it does not work.
“You look at it and you think of the riches of this group, how strong it is over he toss. There’s 1 area where there’s a major problem now and that I think what is fascinating is that teams will appear at exactly what Norwich failed and believe that is the way to really go at them be quite aggressive in your assaulting. The intent was there to have a go at Manchester City.
“In the last couple of years in particular some groups have performed City and believed this is damage limitation – let’s just try and get out of there using the smallest defeat we can get.
“Today teams understand there are vulnerabilities within this team that we can exploit. That’s the challenge for Guardiola to handle because they were quite bad”
Burt:”The way that City perform the centre of defence will be an issue for them going forward. That combo of Otamendi and Stones doesn’t function as a pair, and that’s likely to be a real issue.
“They’re not likely to change their method of playing and moving forward that’ll be the largest issue. I am surprised Otamendi remained in the club. With Kompany going perhaps they thought they needed to keep him centre-half. However, I believed he had gone past his sell by date together with Manchester City and has been amazed they didn’t bring in someone else as alternative alongside Laporte.
“Stones has had his difficulties in terms of the mistakes he has been making and that he hasn’t been too convincing. Clearly it was very intriguing year that Kompany played a great deal of games and he was had by them.
“The combination of these 2 means there is not a leader. Nobody really is currently marshalling the defence and taking charge of it. It should be Otamendi actually but I don’t think he is powerful enough to do that as a character. John Stones are liked by me, I enjoy him as a participant. He is a player that is very great although there are issue. He wants somebody alongside him who is about to marshal this defence. He’s not going to be that person.”
Delaney:”One of the undercurrents prior to the season was if Liverpool will be able to sustain the same level they achieved last season. The expectation was they would drop off, not City.
“People expected that from City last year after the 100 points. Whether that is the small drop off that comes in application.
“Among those things that was said following the deception was the fact that they were knackered, the emotional effort required to win those three trophies – and I guess you can bring in the European campaign also – was a good deal. The players wish to stay at precisely exactly the same level but almost they can not. It’s just taken too much of a toll.”
Gedra:”Everybody is discussing City’s defence. I believe see City within the last few seasons have been able to find collective solutions and we need to quit looking so much in the people. And I believe that’s what they’re going to do with this issue that is defensive.
“You might believe that Stones and Otamendi are not enjoying like Otamendi and Laporte or even Kompany and Laporte were, however Laporte is injured so that is it. Since he was the most consistent defender for City of course it has a huge effect in the way that they build up and shield.
“However, City always manage to find good solutions. They played for the most aspect of last season without Kevin de Bruyne and he had been the essential part of the game that was attacking. So today I truly think they will discover defensive alternatives looking at the collective”
Burt:”Guardiola’s have a huge problem and he has to get a quick solution. It might be that it is moving Fernandinho back into the defence, which I presume they have been doing in practice and trialling a bit.”
