The fifth Ashes Test at The Oval is not only the final game of the series – it’s additionally Trevor Bayliss’ game as England head coach.
Bayliss has witnessed England win a home Ashes series, climb to the peak of the ranks and win their first men’s World Cup.
However, England have had a combined period in the Test arena and need to win to draw this Ashes series 2-2.
Bayliss talked to BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew regarding the highs and lows of the tenure as head trainer.
Bayliss was appointed England head coach May 2015 along with his very first show in charge was that summer’s home Ashes .
“The only way I could explain it [being an undercover training against Australia] was that it was just like playing backyard cricket climbing upward.
“You played along with your brothers and mates in the garden and it was dog eat dog, but when you’ve finished, or between innings, you hurried down the river and went for a swim or obtained on your bicycles as best mates.
“However, you played the game as hard as hard as you could do to find the bragging rights on those guys and it was not really any different back then or maybe within this sequence.
“There’s some guys in the Australian team that I know very well. They are trying to win the match for their team as far as they possibly can and I’d like that the England boys to win as much as I possibly can too.”
Among Bayliss’ focuses as head trainer was to overhaul England’s white-ball team after the 2015 World Cup, which saw them dropped out from the group stages.
“It was very much an attention. When I spoke to [director of championships ] Andrew Strauss, the way England played also they needed to turn that around and at the 2015 World Cup wasn’t up to scratch, but Test cricket was as a focal point.
“It wasn’t as if we only pushed to the desktop and stated white-ball is the most important. We knew this came up, this summer, with also a home Ashes and a house World Cup and also we all wanted to be in a position to win both.
“I said to my wife before I came back for this summer, I would like to win at least one of the trophies.”
England won their first men’s World Cup in July in an enthralling game against New Zealand, which witnessed that the decoration determined by the number of boundaries played following a connected Super Over.
“What I thought of the next day was I did not actually realise how big a game or how good a match that has been.
“If you’re actually involved in the sport, you are kind of thinking of strategies or what we can and ought to be doing, you are not actually considering their entertainment value, exactly what the lovers are watching.
“But waking up the next morning and watching the response in my phone, and I probably got more messages 24 hours once I buy in a complete year!
“The lap of honour at Lord’s, it had been excellent to see the smiles not only on the faces of the players and the management staff, but the complete delight on the faces of everybody in that audience.
“It’s been great to be involved with a World Cup win, however it’s actually the players who possess the accolades. They are those which have gone out and done the work. I think as a coaching staff and a management team behind it, we’re blessed to participate inside and play with such a close function with the guys that have been able to venture out and get it done.”
Bayliss is seen as a figure and has been criticised at times for what is perceived as a coaching style
“Sometimes it is irked me a tiny bit when you see a number of that kind of media since they just don’t understand what goes on.
“I also permit the coaches we work with to do their jobs and talk to some of the gamers too. It’s not as if we don’t get together and talk about each person, the way the team is playing, but as the batting coach or bowling coach, I let them do their job and get on.
“We get together and discuss what we might speak with the batters or even bowlers around but it’s exactly the 1 message.”
England have had an period in Test cricket on the previous four years – they have not lost a home Test series but they were thrashed 4-0 from the Ashes in Australia and have been bowled out in the West Indies and New Zealand.
“The issue England cricket have got to answer isthe wickets we play in four-day cricket – are they doing the work well enough so the players coming are much better able to actually play at the next level?
“There are a great deal of good trainers and administrators at the county level. As we have here working with England, you speak to them, they’ve got the same concerns.
“There are a lot of talented players directly throughout the initial and second branch of county cricket. What type of requirements have we got to play and how can we make it easier?
“They are the questions that I think have to be answered.”
