England manager Gareth Southgate will have struggled to choose whether his glass was half-full or half-empty as he reflected in St Mary’s to a thud and blunder night against Kosovo.
First things – everyone at Southampton appreciated a Euro 2020 qualifier that led to a rousing ovation for both sides at the conclusion of England victory.
And Southgate will have revelled in England’s magnificent attacking screen, flanked by a performance out of Raheem Sterling, who scored once as well as establishing two goals for Jadon Sancho and another for Harry Kane.
Kosovo tormented after central defender Michael Keane presented using a goal in the first minute, passing into Valon Berisha using a clear run at goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
However, there has to be a misery-guts facet so are cruising through Group A after scoring 19 goals in these games and for this story even though England are observing four wins out of four Euro 2020 qualifiers.
The main point is this – England have little or no possibility of beating quality sides should they defend shoddily and carelessly like this, if they provide ownership and are easy to acquire in as Kosovo made it seem.
Kosovo entering this game on the back of a 15-game unbeaten streak are improving quickly and with a triumph following 35, on the Czech Republic that increased their hopes of being one of the qualifiers.
They are, however, currently ranked 120th.
This is a slightly false evaluation given their skill but the truth that they pulled England back from 5-1 to 5-3 in the second half and created a feeling of anxiety and expectation among the fans at both end of St Mary’s says what about the flaws in Southgate’s side.
England were not good – nowhere close to the standard that would be suitable at the level.
Keane was the very first to err but that he was definitely not the final.
While Manchester United’s Harry Maguire failed to clear before hauling down west Ham United’s Declan Rice gave the ball away badly for the moment of Berisha.
Maguire created an horrendous meal of the item of effort to make it a treble helping of dreadful by England and also for dream and all of the flair of the attacking play there’s not any hiding this is a weakness.
Himself pointed in mistakes. This was a night of unbridled joy for England’s manager. There’s a lot to disturb him.
When faced with the Kind of defending England produced against Kosovo Picture the likes of Belgium, France, Spain, Germany and a few others?
Actually it may be better not to envision it.
Would be licking their lips at the notion of confronting this England defence.
England still have the John Stones of Manchester City to return while Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, the best option outside the collections, isn’t getting games in heart 47, but he had a nightmare at the Uefa Nations League semi-final from the Netherlands.
The first pick defenders of southgate have not established reliable against international opposition of the grade – and made no evidence here to indicate they will do soon.
The capacity to operate through England’s midfield and get at the soft centre of kosovo would have concerned Southgate.
It may seem somewhat spoilsport to concentrate in after another victory that is significant on this negative except to dismiss it could be delusion. Southgate will not let it escape his attention.
For of the class and effectiveness of the attack of England, their current condition indicates they’ll need to rack up at least three goals against these teams mentioned to stand a chance of victory because there’s not any way.
This task won’t be as easy as it was against a Kosovo side committed to an all-out attacking strategy that sometimes left them wide open at the back.
England are fallible in defence – but they’re superbly irresistible in assault.
They’ve scored 14 goals in their home matches, more than any other state in Euros qualifying so far.
And at the heart of it was that the Sterling, that produced a 45-minute performance against Kosovo which was from anyone.
Sterling ended a bare sequence that was 27-game stretching back three years after he scored in Spain in England’s 3-2 win a year ago – now he’s irreplaceable, a talent.
Since that game in Spain he’s played with seven matches, scoring six goals in England’s qualifying matches up to now and producing four assists.
He simply could not be stopped from the first 45 minutes as he set up England’s captain for his goal in level with Bryan Robson 41 appearances and one supporting David Platt along with his venture with Kane is currently reaching proportions.
Sterling has been involved in 12 goals in his past eight England games, with eight goals and four assists. He also Kane have combined for six objects beneath Southgate three times as numerous as any other duo.
When Arijanet Muric his second miss saved his second-half penalty in 10 attempts for England, kane’s operation contained a blemish.
In the long run it was not pricey as the brave attempt at a miracle turnaround of Kosovo fell short and England could look at a Group A table with a flawless appearance.
However, particularly that defence, England’s screen, wasn’t perfect if this is created on a larger point, and they won’t come off unscathed.
