Nevada Sports Betting

Nevada legalized sports gambling in 1949 alongside live and off-track horse gambling. It had been the first nation to regulate sports gambling, which had formerly functioned under organized crime syndicates. It was also the only state to do this until recently.

Congress passed the skilled and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 1992, which prohibited future state growth of sports betting. Nevada was grandfathered in, so it was essentially handed a legal US monopoly on single-game wagering.

States finally began to challenge that national ban, nevertheless, spearheaded by New Jersey lawmakers and Gov. Chris Christie. Beginning with voter approval in 2011, NJ tried to pass legislation that would have legalized sports gambling at casinos and racetracks. Sports leagues — the NBA, NCAA, NFL, NHL, and MLB — filed suit against the state to block the attempts, but citing a breach of PASPA.

The ensuing legal battle escalated all the way to the US Supreme Court, finally reaching a settlement on May 14, 2018. A majority of the nine-member court ruled that PASPA commandeers nations in violation of the Tenth Amendment, striking the ban in the books.

Because of this, Nevada’s US monopoly online sports betting has seen its last days. Eight other states offer you a wide selection of legal sports stakes.
