Paddy McNair has advised his Northern Ireland team-mates to keep thinking following their hopes took a hit Monday’s 2-0 home defeat to Germany they are able to qualify for Euro 2020.
A performance at Windsor Park wasn’t enough to prevent Michael O’Neill’s side dropping their first stages of the effort because the overdue second of Serge Gnabry and Marcel Halstenberg attack demonstrated the
difference.
The result viewed Germany move top of Group C together with Northern Ireland to 12 points in five matches.
However, the task gets no easier with the Netherlands, for the White and Green Army away up following and a Visit to Frankfurt to emerge in November.
“Of course we would have taken this place at the beginning of the campaign,” McNair said. “We have three very tough games to come and now we proceed to Holland in another match.
“Then we have them in the home and Germany away, however we are not likely to be disheartened.
“We’ll give all of them a tough game. There are plenty of advantages and we proceed to next month.”
A frustrated O’Neill called the game a”missed opportunity” in the immediate aftermath, given the possibilities Northern Ireland created, such as two openings such as Conor Washington, during a powerful start to the evening .
“It’s really tiny margins in the sport, but I thought we had been amazing from the first halfof” McNair added. “It’s definitely a large improvement. Even in the second half, Stuart [Dallas] took a yard wide which may easily go the other side of this post which makes it another game .”
After McNair tumbled under a challenge from Toni Kroos, northern Ireland may likewise have had the chance to level in the penalty spot just, but their appeals were waved by referee Daniel Orsato.
“I have not seen the penalty incident again, but that I felt a little contact,” said McNair. “There was not much attention, but I went down. I didn’t want to be in a scenario in which the ref thought it was a dive and then sent me away [for a second
Booking ], but I did not want him to think there was no contact because I did believe it.
“It was not much, but I know why the referee didn’t give it. There was touch, however, I’ve no doubt about this. Maybe VAR could have cleared that up.”
Dallas fired wide soon afterwards, but this was the last chance for the hosts until issues settled at stoppage time.
“it is a good sign coming from a game believing we certainly should have taken something out of it,” McNair added. “It’s our best performance against them in recent meetings, but you can’t help but feel it was a missed chance.
“But we’re still joint top of the team. I understand we’ve got three tough games coming up, but we must keep optimistic considering the position we have put ourselves in.”
